The NAMASTE Scheme (National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem) is a major initiative of the Government of India aimed at eliminating manual scavenging and ensuring the dignity, safety, and socio-economic security of sanitation workers. The scheme promotes the mechanization of sewer and septic tank cleaning, replacing hazardous manual practices with modern equipment and safety systems.
NAMASTE also focuses on skill development, occupational safety, and livelihood security by providing sanitation workers with training, protective gear, health support, and opportunities to form sanitation enterprises. By addressing safety, dignity, and economic empowerment, the scheme works to eliminate caste-based occupational discrimination and create a safer, more respectful sanitation ecosystem.
